The Southington Citizen will host a meet-and-greet reception Wednesday, March 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at its office, 40 N. Main St. to provide an opportunity for community members to meet new editor Zachary Janowski. Light refreshments will be served.

There is no formal schedule for the evening, so please stop by for a moment if you have a chance.

Town will fight labor complaint

Director of Recreation William Masci filed a complaint against the town with the Connecticut Board of Labor Relations last week, claiming the town violated the Municipal Employee Relations Act by dealing directly with union personnel, transferring work away from Masci and intimidating union members.
The United Public Service Employees Union filed the complaint on Feb. 18 on behalf of Masci.

Foodshare grant helps Southington's needy

Thanks to the generous underwriting support of Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, Foodshare has made a grant of $5,000 to the Salvation Army/Southington Community Services from its Partnership Fund. This grant will be used to pay for a temporary hire and materials to create a manual, welcome packet and welcome class for food pantry volunteers.

Former inmate arrested five hours after release from prison

Police say a local man was arrested On Saturday for stealing a taxi five hours after he was released from Hartford Correctional Facility.

Police arrested Matthew Findley, 25, of 12 Beecher St. and charged him with Use of MV without permission, fourth-degree larceny and first-degree criminal trover.

Mandated audit

The election department has announced that a mandated audit of two voting districts (South End and Strong Schools) will be held on Friday, Sept. 3 in the town council chambers, second floor of Town Hall, 75 Main St., Southington, starting at 9 a.m. until completion.

In 2009, for the first time its 25-year history, the annual hot air balloon festival fell subject to a tropical storm, preventing the balloons from launching, and putting a damper on the weekend event.
