Hearty soup, hearty fundraiser

Volunteers serve up hundreds, if not thousands, of bowls of soup Wednesday night at the Bread for Life annual Soup Nite held at Southington High School. It is one of the largest fundraisers for the food program and many school clubs get involved with making it a success.

A political debate, sponsored by the Greater Southington Chamber of Commerce, will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m., at the Calendar House senior center, 388 Pleasant St. Candidates for Southington’s municipal boards will be there. The public is invited.

Postal carriers to collect food Saturday

On Saturday, May 8, the U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will conduct its annual food drive to collect donated food items to assist in feeding the hungry across the United States.

More than 700 diners sample the soups, bread and desserts provided by area restaurants during Bread for Life's annual Soup Nite held Wednesday to raise funds for the local food program. People stood in line waiting to be seated. Visitors could also bid on raffle items or have their faces painted by Valentine the Clown. The event is considered to be the most successful Soup Nite held for the cause.
