June 10th was a regular Wednesday to most of us, but to Southington native Nick Greenwood, it was a life-changing afternoon.  The junior from the University of Rhode Island baseball team was drafted by the San Diego Padres in this year’s Major League Baseball draft and the last couple of weeks have been close to a blur for the lefthanded  pitcher.

Nick Greenwood was a standout lefty at URI. He was recently named to the Second Team All-Northeast Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. He finished his junior year with 74 strikeouts, a 6.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio in Atlantic 10 games (42 strikeouts, seven walks) and was fourth in the conference with a .239 opposing batting average and a 3.15 ERA in league games. He was also named an All-New England first team selection and earned A-10 All-Championship honors after giving up just two runs over eight innings of work in a 9-2 win over top-seeded Dayton.
