The 2010-11 Southington school year will feature an expanded breakfast program that will now service all eight elementary schools. Piloted in 2009-10 at three schools, this highly successful program was made possible through numerous civic organizations and private foundations. Bread for Life, under the direction of Bill McDougall, who was the major sponsor of the pilot, will underwrite the entire 2010-11 program at all the elementary schools.
Dr. Joseph V. Erardi Jr., superintendent of Southington schools stated in a press release, “We were able to support the needs of dozens of students and their families as youngsters were able to start their day with a nutritious breakfast. The step forward by Bread for Life is extraordinary. I am both humbled and thrilled with this school partnership. I know I speak for the entire school community in thanking Bill and his board of directors for providing this opportunity in all eight of our schools.”
Sherri DiNello, director of business and finance, who has district oversight for the program said, “The enthusiasm of our administration and school lunch staff to expand the breakfast program to all of our elementary schools has been tremendous. I appreciate the partnership established with Bread for Life and their commitment to the children of Southington. Breakfast will be offered at Thalberg, Flanders and Derynoski Elementary Schools beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 7 and the expansion to Hatton, Strong, South End, Plantsville and Kelley Elementary Schools will start on Monday, Sept. 13. Information regarding menus and pricing will soon be available on the district's Web site.”
McDougall, who is chairman of the Bread for Life Board of Directors said, “We would like to thank the hundreds of Southington individuals, businesses, churches and civic organizations that give generously to our Annual Giving Appeal. It is with this support that enables us to fund this very valuable breakfast program.”
Additional information will be forthcoming from each elementary school. The Southington Public Schools Web site is www.southingtonschools.org.
