Little League and Girl's Softball registration - A town-wide registration for all Southington Little Leagues and Girl's Softball is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Derynoski Elementary School cafeteria, 240 Main St. This is for Southington residents only; the minimum age is 5 years old as of April 30, 2009. Parents should bring the child's birth certificate and the parent's driver's license for proof of residency. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation office at (860) 276-6219.

Children's musical - The Southington Land Conservation Trust has scheduled the children's musical "Lemonade," Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St. The 45-minute presentation includes 34 first- through fourth-graders. Valentine chocolate festival - The American Legion Auxiliary, Kiltonic Unit 72, in Southington has scheduled the Valentine Chocolate Festival, Saturday, Feb. 7, (snow date Feb. 8), at the American Legion Post Home, 66 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a large variety of all things chocolate, including candy, cakes, cookies, pies, and tortes, all handmade by members. In addition, there will be over 25 themed raffle baskets and a cafe to have lunch, consisting of stuffed baked potatoes, chowder, hot dogs, drinks and special desserts for a nominal price. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Chamber Singers concert - St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1125 Stafford Ave., Bristol, is sponsoring a "Love Songs for a Lifetime" concert, featuring the Southington Chamber Singers, Sunday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. The nine-member a cappella choir is known for its singing of unique arrangements and close harmonies. This Valentine-themed program will include centuries of love songs, from madrigals and traditional folk songs to arrangements of popular songs and show tunes. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to make a freewill offering to the St. Andrew Endowment Fund.

Jewelry workshop - The Southington Arts and Crafts Association is sponsoring the following spring program, which will be held at the Orchards Community Room, 34 Hobart St., Southington, Monday, Feb. 9, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., a Jewelry Workshop by Marge Muzyczka. Participants will be able to make a necklace, bracelet or earrings and all supplies will be provided, but a beading board or other tools can be brought. The cost for supplies is $20 for a necklace, $15 for a bracelet and $12 for earrings. Non-SACA members will be charged a $5 class fee. All Night Graduation Party meeting - The next meeting of the Southington High School All Night Graduation Party will be Monday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the school's library, 720 Pleasant St. There are only five meetings left and help is needed.

American Legion meeting - The American Legion Post 72 Realty Corporation has scheduled its annual meeting Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. during the Post 72 regular monthly meeting at the Post Home, 64 Main St., Southington, in the hall upstairs.

Holy Trinity Church pork dinner - Holy Trinity Church, 200 Summer St., Plantsville, will be hosting a pork dinner with all the fixings, Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $9 per person and includes salad, pork dinner, dessert, coffee or soda. A limited amount of tickets will be sold at the door.

Retirement party - Lt. Clifford Saucier of the Southington Police Department will be retiring from the department on Feb. 8, after 39 years of dedicated service. To celebrate his retirement, a party will be held in his honor, Thursday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville. Tickets are $50 and include food stations, beer and wine, and are available at the Southington Police Department, 69 Lazy Lane, or from Patrick Saucier at (860) 628-1349.

Town closings - Southington Town Hall, the Southington Public Library and Barnes Museum will be closed Thursday, Feb. 12, in observance of Lincoln's Birthday.

Breakfast Club - The Breakfast Club at the First Congregational Church of Southington, 37 Main St., across from the Town Green, meets on the second Thursday, September through June, from 8 to 9 a.m. in Memorial Hall. A complete breakfast is only $1, and the public is always welcome. Adequate parking is available in the municipal parking lot.

Pasta Night - The John F. Kennedy and Joseph A. DePaolo Middle Schools Drama Club is sponsoring a Pasta Night to be held at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St., Thursday, Feb. 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, $5 for children through high school and children six and under are free. This event is open to the public. Kroher Birthday Blood Drive - The Polish Falcons Club, 33 Knowles Ave., Southington, will be hosting the 3rd Annual Betty Kroher Birthday Blood Drive in celebration of the 80th birthday of the former leader of the Southington Red Cross, Thursday, Feb. 12, from 1 to 6:45 p.m. The drive had been postponed from its original October date. Valentine's Dance - Mary Our Queen Church will hold its 33rd Annual Valentine's Dance at the Aqua Turf, Wagon Room, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville, Saturday, Feb. 14, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. The cost is $114 per couple and includes dinner, open bar and dancing to the band DeNovo. Dinner will be served at 8 p.m. and includes salad, pasta, chicken florentine, maple glazed carots, roasted new bliss potatoes, pastry platter, and coffee and tea. Accordionist performance - The Connecticut Accordion Association is sponsoring accordionist Bruce Gassman to perform at Cugino's Restaurant, 1410 Highland Ave., Cheshire, Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. The performance will feature pop and 60's rock, light classical, Beatles and ethnic music. Accordion enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their instruments and participate in a brief workshop.

School closings - Southington Public Schools will be closed from Monday, Feb. 16 through Friday, Feb. 20 for winter vacation. Classes resume on Monday, Feb. 23.

When I'm in Charge - Southington Youth Services, 93 Main St., has scheduled a Red Cross program for 4th- and 5th-grade students called "When I'm in Charge," Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. Presented by Terri Benoit, this program covers how to be safe and responsible when students are at home on their own. Book discussion club - The Southington Public Library, 255 Main St., offers a book discussion series "Between the Lines A Book Discussion Club" at 7 p.m., in the lower level program room. Each month a popular book is discussed by local scholars. Wednesday, Feb. 18, "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood is the featured book. The public is welcome.

The book discussions are funded by the Friends of Southington Library and the Connecticut Humanities Council. Books are available at the reference desk and registration required. Radio hour at Barnes Museum - An old-time radio hour will be held Thursdays, Feb. 19 and 26, at 6 p.m. at the Barnes Museum, 85 N. Main St., Southington. People are invited to relax in the museum's living room to hear old radio broadcasts on the 1934 Scott radio console, such as "The Shadow" and "War of the Worlds." The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Hot tea and cocoa will be served.

Quilts for children in need - The Southwest Hartford Chapter of Project Linus is holding a "Make a Blanket Day," Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 37 Main St., Southington. The program distributes blankets to children of all ages who are in hospitals, shelters and social service agencies. Quilters of all skill levels are welcome to make quilts for children in need.

Organics presentation - The Southington Land Conservation Trust is scheduled to present "Organics," Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Southington Public Library meeting room, 255 Main St. The speaker will be Bill Duesing, the executive director of the Connecticut chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association. Mardi Gras Night - The 5th annual Southington Rotary Mardi Gras Night is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 10 p.m., at Anthony Jacks Wood-Fired Grill, 30 Center St., Southington. Pasta dinner benefit - Youth from First Baptist Church of Southington, who will be going this summer on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, will be participating in the benefit "Life in Their Shoes," Saturday, Feb. 28. Proceeds from the pasta dinner, concert and silent auction will support the mission trip being organized by First Baptist Church of Wallingford. This year's concert will be "The Traci Basic Show." The event will be held at Sheehan High School, 142 Hope Hill Road, Wallingford. Arc Dinner Dance fundraiser - The Arc of Southington, an advocacy organization and service provider for people with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities, will hold its 17th annual Dinner Dance fundraising event, Saturday, March 7, from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville. Tickets cost $60 per person and include a cheese table during cocktail hour, a family style dinner of salad, pasta, chicken and beef dishes, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, dessert, coffee, open bar and disc jockey Gary Racine of Ultimate Entertainment Professional Disc Jockeys. Mill Foundation for Kids dinner - The Mill Foundation for Kids, a community-based, charitable organization, has scheduled its 3rd annual fundraiser dinner, Saturday, March 14 from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., in Southington. ‘Shamrockin' for Kid's will be a St. Patrick's Day themed dinner dance and will include raffles and an auction to raise funds to help children while in the hospital. The cost is $75 per person and includes dinner, open bar and dancing. Sponsorships for the dance are also available. The mission of the Mill Foundation for Kids, Inc. is to ease the burden of children dealing with illnesses by providing toys and other gifts to pediatric facilities for the use of children recovering from illnesses, as well as donating funds towards research aimed at eliminating pediatric illnesses. Medication disposal program - The Southington Water Department, in conjunction with local volunteers, will be hosting a free medication disposal program for town residents, Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the SWD Headquarters, 605 West Queen St., Southington. This free event is an opportunity to clean out medicine cabinets and bring all expired and unwanted medication for proper disposal, including prescription, vitamins, over-the-counter and veterinary. All medicine will be disposed of properly by incineration and no medicine will be reused or resold. Also, thermometers, needles or medical waste of any type will not be accepted.

All medicines returned should be in the original bottle with the name and address of the patient crossed off with a permanent marker, which will be available at the event. Leave the name of the medication visible for the pharmacist's review. A law enforcement officer will be in attendance per state and federal laws. Participants will be asked a few general questions, such as town of residence and why the medication is no longer wanted; no personal information will be requested.
