Outreach career workshop — Representatives from Central Connecticut State University’s Career Services Department will present free outreach career workshops at the Southington Public Library, 255 Main St. Patricia Deloy, director of CCSU Career Services will present Job Searching and Effective Interviewing, Friday, March 13 at 10 a.m. Participants will learn about the employment interview process, the types of questions asked, and tips to help interview with confidence. Workshops are approximately one hour in length and registration is required. Pasta fagioli special — Saint Thomas Home-School Association is sponsoring a “Pasta Fagioli” special, Fridays, March 13, 20, 27 and April 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., in the school cafeteria, 133 Bristol St., Southington. Chef David DiBenedetto, former chef and owner of DiBenedetto’s Restaurant in Plainville, will prepare the meal. The cost is $6 per person for salad, Italian bread, “all-you-can-eat” pasta fagioli and beverage. This event is open to the public and proceeds benefit St. Thomas School.

Mill Foundation for Kids dinner — The Mill Foundation for Kids, a community-based, charitable organization, has scheduled its 3rd annual fundraiser dinner, Saturday, March 14 from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., in Southington. ‘Shamrockin’ for Kid’s will be a St. Patrick’s Day themed dinner dance and will include raffles and an auction to raise funds to help children while in the hospital. The cost is $75 per person and includes dinner, open bar and dancing. Sponsorships for the dance are also available. The mission of the Mill Foundation for Kids, Inc. is to ease the burden of children dealing with illnesses by providing toys and other gifts to pediatric facilities for the use of children recovering from illnesses, as well as donating funds towards research aimed at eliminating pediatric illnesses. Band Backers tag sale — The Southington Band Backers are sponsoring an Indoor Tag Sale, Saturday, March 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Southington High School cafeteria, 720 Pleasant St. Admission is $2. Antiques, collectibles, sporting goods, housewares, giftware, toys, games, electronics and other items will be available. The proceeds from the sale will go to Southington High School Marching Band members to help fund band trips, uniforms and other expenses.
Peace Café performance — The Peace Cafe Coffeehouse at the First Congregational Church, 37 Main St., Southington, host musical performers on the second Saturday of each month. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated; refreshments are offered. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 14, the opening act is Eric Paradine and the featured artists are Cross Purpose, four Christian brothers, Bob Stanhope, Roy Ellingsen, Tim Kennedy and Mike Mayer, bringing the message of Jesus Christ, redemption and hope. Gershwin performance — Pianist and showman Paul Bisaccia is scheduled to perform at the First Congregational Church of Southington, 37 Main St., Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Although specializing in the music of George Gershwin, his performance repertoire and musical interests are wide ranging. Gluten-Free Pot Luck Dinner — The Central Connecticut Celiac Support Group will sponsor a St. Paddy’s Day Gluten-Free Pot Luck Dinner, at Mulberry Gardens, 58 Mulberry St. in Southington, Sunday, March 15, at 1 p.m. This event is open to the public. Participants should bring a gluten-free dish to share. Cost is free to members, $5 for non-members and $2 for children. Lifelong Learning Association — The Lifelong Learning Association schedules a variety of speakers at its monthly Timely Topics sessions, held at 1 p.m. on the third Monday of most months at Tunxis Community College, located at the intersection of routes 6 and 177 in Farmington. Italian ice giveaway — Rita’s 17th Annual First Day of Spring Italian Ice Giveaway is scheduled for Friday, March 20, from noon until 10 p.m at the 279 Queen St. location in Southington. Each guest will receive a complimentary 10 ounce cup of Rita’s Italian Ice to celebrate the first day of spring. This giveaway will take place at all Rita’s locations.

Elks awards dinner — The Southington Elks Lodge 1669, 114 Main St., will host its annual awards dinner to honor outstanding citizens who have contributed to the community and lodge, Saturday, March 21. Artist reception at library — Children of all ages, adults, and families of Southington are the March Artists of the Month at the Southington Library. The public responded with over 80 pieces of artwork to express their creativity using varied art medium creating personal works of art for the community to enjoy at The Gallery at the library, 255 Main St. The communty is invited to the “Express Yourself” reception, Thursday, March 26 at 6 p.m. in the lower level program room. Light refreshments will be provided. Co-sponsors of the “Express Yourself” through ART at the Library project are Southington Arts and Crafts Association and the Southington Library.

Pasta dinner benefit — Holy Trinity Church, 200 Summer St., Plantsville will hold a pasta dinner Thursday, March 26, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the church hall to benefit the Southington Relay for Life. The cost is $7 and includes pasta, homemade meatballs, salad, bread and butter, dessert, and coffee or soda. Prize drawings will also be held, with survivors participating in a special prize drawing. Irish program at library — Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. in the Level program room of the Southington Library, 255 Main St., Bob Larkin, of the Connecticut Irish American Historical Society, will present the story behind the 9th Irish Regiment of Connecticut, who trained in New Haven before going south to join other Union regiments. The 9th Regiment and the organization of Irish groups banded together to raise the funds and design the first Connecticut monument in Vicksburg, a National Military Park. The hand etchings on the monument were done by Stacy Mathieu of Mathieu Monuments of Southington. Registration is suggested. Historical Society lecture — A free lecture entitled “Made for Manufacturing: Atwater Industrial Site, 1767-2009,” will be held Saturday, March 28, from noon to 2 p.m., at the Southington Historical Society, 239 Main St. The lecture is open to the public and will be given by Fern Wildman-Schrier, a Southington resident and an industrial archaeologist/preservationist for Historical Technologies, West Suffield. Southington was an important manufacturing center in the 19th century due to a combination of geology, geography, Yankee ingenuity and luck. But one significant section, the Atwater Industrial Site, has been the site of continuous industry for 242 years. The reasons that this site is “made for manufacturing,” will be explored.

Friendly’s fundraiser — The Journey to Adulthood youth group of St. Paul’s Church in Southington will be having a Friendly’s fundraiser, Monday, March 30, from 5 to 8 p.m, at the 408 Queen St. location. This event will support the youth group’s upcoming pilgrimage, which is planned for the Central American country of Belize. Any order, ranging from dinner to ice cream, will help support the youth group. There will be a raffle and clowns to entertain the youngest patrons. Unico Italian dinner — The Unico Club of Southington will hold its semi-annual Italian dinner Monday, March 30 at the Calendar House, 388 Pleasant St., Southington, starting at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will be served family style and consist of pasta fasulo, antipasto, ziti and meatballs, suffrite, chicken parmesan, salad and roasted potatoes. Friendly’s fundraiser — The American Legion Baseball Fundraising Dinner will be held Tuesday, March 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Friendly’s Restaurant, 408 Queen St., Southington. Proceeds will benefit Kiltonic Legion Baseball.
Southington Reads event — Carlos Eire, author of the book “Waiting for Snow in Havana” is scheduled to give a free lecture at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville, Tuesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. This Southington Reads event is open to the public and is sponsored by the Southington Library and Museum, Calvanese Foundation, Friends of the Southington Library and the Aqua Turf Club. Copies of the book are available for loan at the information desk.

Relay for Life meeting — The Southington Relay for Life committee will meet at the Southington High School library, 720 Pleasant St., Wednesday, April 1. Committee meeting begins at 6 p.m. and team captain meetings start at 7 p.m. Volunteers are needed to make this year’s event a success. Relay for Life is an annual 24-hour walkathon to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

When I’m in Charge — Southington Youth Services, 93 Main St., has scheduled a Red Cross program for 4th- and 5th-grade students called "When I'm in Charge,” Tuesday, April 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. Presented by Terri Benoit, this program covers how to be safe and responsible when students are at home on their own. Medication disposal program — The Southington Water Department, in conjunction with local volunteers, will be hosting a free medication disposal program for town residents, Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the SWD Headquarters, 605 West Queen St., Southington. This free event is an opportunity to clean out medicine cabinets and bring all expired and unwanted medication for proper disposal, including prescription, vitamins, over-the-counter and veterinary. All medicine will be disposed of properly by incineration and no medicine will be reused or resold. Also, thermometers, needles or medical waste of any type will not be accepted.
All medicines returned should be in the original bottle with the name and address of the patient crossed off with a permanent marker, which will be available at the event. Leave the name of the medication visible for the pharmacist's review. A law enforcement officer will be in attendance per state and federal laws. Participants will be asked a few general questions, such as town of residence and why the medication is no longer wanted; no personal information will be requested.
