Play at Peace Café — “Twelve Angry Jurors,” a play by Sherman L. Sergel, adapted from the television show by Reginald Rose, will be performed in the Peace Café at First Congregational Church, 37 Main St., Southington, Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21, and Thursday through Saturday, March 26 to 28, at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee performance, Sunday, March 22. Italian ice giveaway — Rita’s 17th Annual First Day of Spring Italian Ice Giveaway is scheduled for Friday, March 20, from noon until 10 p.m, at the 279 Queen St. location in Southington. Each guest will receive a complimentary 10-ounce cup of Rita’s Italian Ice to celebrate the first day of spring. This giveaway will take place at all Rita’s locations.
Pasta fagioli special — St. Thomas Home-School Association is sponsoring a Pasta Fagioli special, Fridays, March 20, 27 and April 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., in the school cafeteria, 133 Bristol St., Southington. Chef David DiBenedetto, former chef and owner of DiBenedetto’s Restaurant in Plainville, will prepare the meal. The cost is $6 per person for salad, Italian bread, “all-you-can-eat” pasta fagioli and beverage. This event is open to the public and proceeds benefit St. Thomas School.

Bluegrass concert — A bluegrass concert, featuring the music of "Crossover," will be held at First Baptist Church of Southington, 581 Meriden Ave., Saturday, March 21, at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $7 per person or $20 per family, including light refreshments, and may be purchased through the church office or at the door. Elks awards dinner — The Southington Elks Lodge 1669, 114 Main St., will host its annual awards dinner to honor outstanding citizens who have contributed to the community and lodge, Saturday, March 21. The event begins with social hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person and are available for purchase at the lodge Tap Room everyday from 4 to 8 p.m. This year’s award recipients are: Sharyn Pliska, Elk of the Year; Kimberley Weaver, Officer of the Year; Joe Angelillo, PER, Citizen of the Year; Denise Roy and Cindy Voorhees, Grand Exalted Ruler Special Commendation for Outstanding Service. Outback fundraiser deadline — The Southington High School Robotics Team 195 is sponsoring a fundraiser at the Outback Steakhouse, 817 Queen St., Southington, Saturday, April 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per person, including tax and gratuity, and includes a 6-ounce sirloin plus 5-ounce chicken breast, garlic mashed potatoes, caesar or ranch salad, honey wheat bread, soft drinks, and coffee or tea. The event is open to the public and 100 percent of all proceeds benefit the Robotics Team.

Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast — Isabella Assembly 122 of the Knights of Columbus in Southington will host its Annual Spring Pancake Breakfast Buffet, Sunday, March 22, from 7 to 11:30 a.m., at the Calendar House, 388 Pleasant St. Tickets cost $6 per person and children age 5 and under are free. Proceeds will help local Catholic schools, Saint Dominic, Saint Thomas and Saint Paul’s High School, in their efforts to provide assistance to students whose families find themselves in economically disadvantaged circumstances. The program will feature comedy magician and former clown, Chick Kelman, and ventriloquist Larry Novia with his puppets, Howie, Rose and Sal Minella. Keeping children safe program — The Southington Drug Task Force is sponsoring a program entitled “Risky Behaviors,” Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m., at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St., for parents and students. Superintendant Joseph Erardi, Southington High School Principal Kathleen McGrath and the Southington Police Department's Sgt. Lowell DePalma will present programs on keeping children safe. For students in 5th through 7th-grade, a video presentation about substance abuse and bullying “Behind the Faces” will be shown. There will be character activities for students in kindergarten through 4th-grade by the Southington YMCA. Babysitting is available by appointment. Call (860) 276-6281 to register.

Apple Valley Quilters meeting — The Apple Valley Quilters will meet Monday, March 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Hatton Elementary School, 50 Spring Lake Road, Southington. The group will make pillowcases for the Hole in the Wall camps. This event is open to the public and participants should bring fabric, rulers and machines. The meeting will not be held if school is cancelled.

Genealogy group — The Southington Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., in the community room of the Southington Police Department, 69 Lazy Lane. There is no admission charge, no obligation to become a member, and no reservations are necessary. Ample parking is available and refreshments will be served.
Orchard Valley Garden Club meeting — The Orchard Valley Garden Club of Southington will meet Tuesday, March 24, at 10 a.m., at the Southington Public Library, 255 Main St., lower level. Program speaker will be Nancy Debrule-Clemente of Natureworks in Northford. Her program focuses on garden design, installation and maintenance. Business meeting will follow. Artist reception at library — Children of all ages, adults, and families of Southington are the March Artists of the Month at the Southington Library. The public responded with over 80 pieces of artwork to express their creativity using varied art medium creating personal works of art for the community to enjoy at The Gallery at the library, 255 Main St. The community is invited to the “Express Yourself” reception, Thursday, March 26, at 6 p.m., in the lower level program room. Light refreshments will be provided. Co-sponsors of the “Express Yourself” through ART at the Library project are Southington Arts and Crafts Association and the Southington Library.

Pasta dinner benefit — Holy Trinity Church, 200 Summer St., Plantsville, will hold a pasta dinner Thursday, March 26, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., in the church hall to benefit the Southington Relay for Life. The cost is $7 and includes pasta, homemade meatballs, salad, bread and butter, dessert, and coffee or soda. Prize drawings will also be held, with survivors participating in a special prize drawing. Memorial blood drive — The Aidan Stewart Memorial Blood Drive will be held Friday, March 27, from 11:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m., at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St., Plantsville. The drive has been established by Kevin and Kimberly (Romajas) Stewart in memory of their son to promote awareness of the importance of blood donation throughout the community. Spring Fling — The Thalberg Spring Fling will be held Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m to 3 p.m., at 145 Dunham Road, Southington. More than 40 vendors will be showcasing their products. The event will include a full lunch menu and drawings, including one for a Stop & Shop gift card worth $100. Admission is $1, and includes a drawing ticket. Irish program at library — Saturday, March 28, at 1 p.m., in the Level program room of the Southington Library, 255 Main St., Bob Larkin, of the Connecticut Irish American Historical Society, will present the story behind the 9th Irish Regiment of Connecticut, who trained in New Haven before going south to join other Union regiments. The 9th Regiment and the organization of Irish groups banded together to raise the funds and design the first Connecticut monument in Vicksburg, a National Military Park. The hand etchings on the monument were done by Stacy Mathieu of Mathieu Monuments of Southington. Registration is suggested. Historical Society lecture — A free lecture entitled “Made for Manufacturing: Atwater Industrial Site, 1767-2009,” will be held Saturday, March 28, from noon to 2 p.m., at the Southington Historical Society, 239 Main St. The lecture is open to the public and will be given by Fern Wildman-Schrier, a Southington resident and an industrial archaeologist/preservationist for Historical Technologies, West Suffield. Southington was an important manufacturing center in the 19th century due to a combination of geology, geography, Yankee ingenuity and luck. But one significant section, the Atwater Industrial Site, has been the site of continuous industry for 242 years. The reasons that this site is “made for manufacturing,” will be explored.
Gently used item swap — The Relief Society Organization for the Southington Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 750 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, is sponsoring a community service project. Members of the church are gathering gently used items, such as clothing, household goods, baby items, toys, books, durable and non-upholstered furniture, and collectables, for a non-monetary exchange of items on Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are no previews and no holding; items must be taken during the four-hour time period. After 1 p.m., the items will be donated to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Friendly’s fundraiser — The Journey to Adulthood youth group of St. Paul’s Church in Southington will be having a Friendly’s fundraiser, Monday, March 30, from 5 to 8 p.m, at the 408 Queen St. location. This event will support the youth group’s upcoming pilgrimage, which is planned for the Central American country of Belize. Any order, ranging from dinner to ice cream, will help support the youth group. There will be a raffle and clowns to entertain the youngest patrons. Unico Italian dinner — The Unico Club of Southington will hold its semi-annual Italian dinner Monday, March 30 at the Calendar House, 388 Pleasant St., Southington, starting at 6:30 p.m. The dinner will be served family style and consist of pasta fasulo, antipasto, ziti and meatballs, suffrite, chicken parmesan, salad and roasted potatoes. Southington Reads event — Carlos Eire, author of the book “Waiting for Snow in Havana” is scheduled to give a free lecture at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville, Tuesday, March 31, at 7 p.m. This Southington Reads event is open to the public and is sponsored by the Southington Library and Museum, Calvanese Foundation, Friends of the Southington Library and the Aqua Turf Club. Relay for Life meeting — The Southington Relay for Life committee will meet at the Southington High School library, 720 Pleasant St., Wednesday, April 1. Committee meeting begins at 6 p.m. and team captain meetings start at 7 p.m. Volunteers are needed to make this year’s event a success. Relay for Life is an annual 24-hour walkathon to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Annual Glass Show And Sale — The Nutmeg Depression Glass Club will present its annual Glass Show and Sale at Southington High School, 720 Pleasant St., Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dealers from New England and New York will display their glass, starting with the depression era through the present time, for view and sale to the public. Companies such as Cambridge, Heisey, Duncan & Miller, Fenton, Fostoria and depression patterns from Adam to Windsor will be on display. There will also be a free glass identification booth. Appraisals will not be provided. Admission is $6 or $5 with this announcement. Food will be available. The proceeds from the cafeteria will benefit the Southington High School Café club.

When I’m in Charge — Southington Youth Services, 93 Main St., has scheduled a Red Cross program for 4th- and 5th-grade students called "When I'm in Charge,” Tuesday, April 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. Presented by Terri Benoit, this program covers how to be safe and responsible when students are at home on their own. Medication disposal program — The Southington Water Department, in conjunction with local volunteers, will be hosting a free medication disposal program for town residents, Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the SWD Headquarters, 605 West Queen St., Southington. This free event is an opportunity to clean out medicine cabinets and bring all expired and unwanted medication for proper disposal, including prescription, vitamins, over-the-counter and veterinary. All medicine will be disposed of properly by incineration and no medicine will be reused or resold. Also, thermometers, needles or medical waste of any type will not be accepted.
All medicines returned should be in the original bottle with the name and address of the patient crossed off with a permanent marker, which will be available at the event. Leave the name of the medication visible for the pharmacist's review. A law enforcement officer will be in attendance per state and federal laws. Genealogy group — The Southington Genealogical Society is scheduled to meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., in the community room of the Southington Police Department, 69 Lazy Lane. There is no admission charge, no obligation to become a member, and no reservations are necessary. Ample parking is available and refreshments will be served.

Relay for Life meeting — The Southington Relay for Life committee will meet at the Southington High School library, 720 Pleasant St., Wednesday, April 29. Committee meeting begins at 6 p.m. and team captain meetings start at 7 p.m. Volunteers are needed to make this year’s event a success. Relay for Life is an annual 24-hour walkathon to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Arc golf tournament — A golf tournament to benefit The Arc of Southington’s Recreation Department will be held Friday, May 15, at 9 a.m., at Hawk’s Landing Country Club, Pattonwood Drive, Southington. The rain date is Friday, June 12. Cost is $130 per person, including shotgun start, greens fees, cart, lunch and dinner. Tickets for the dinner only, which starts at 4 p.m., may be purchase for $50.
