A Holiday Fantasy - Children of all ages (children under the age of 5 must be seated with an adult) are invited to attend "A Holiday Fantasy," a Spring Valley Puppet Theater presentation, Monday, Dec. 29 at 10:30 a.m., in the Café Corner at the Southington Public Library, 255 Main St. In-person registration is required for this event.

Red Cross blood drive - St. Dominic Church has scheduled an American Red Cross blood drive Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 1 to 6 p.m., in the church's Geraghty Parish Center, at the corner of Flanders Road and Laning Street in Southington. People who are healthy, age 17 or over, weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated whole blood in the last eight weeks, call Pat Monahan at (860) 621-4939 to schedule an appointment.

Holiday closings - Southington Public Schools, Town Hall, Southington Library, Barnes Museum and Calendar House will be closed in observance of New Year's Day.

Happy New Year - The Southington Citizen, 40 N. Main St., will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1, for New Year's Day. It will reopen Friday, Jan. 2. For more information, call the office at (860) 620-2989.

La Leche League of Southington - Mother-to-mother breastfeeding support meeting, guided by La Leche League Leader, will be held Monday, Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Wolcott Library, 469 Bound Line Road. Lecture on telephones - A display of telephone history will be given by noted collector Bill Daniels, of Naugatuck, at the Southington Historical Society, 239 Main St., Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m. Daniels will display some rare pieces of telephone apparatus and give a presentation on the history of the telephone, concentrating on its manufacture, use and history in Connecticut.

Nursery school open house - Plantsville Nursery School, 109 Church St., will be hosting an open house for interested families or those already registered for the 2009-2010 school year, Sunday, Jan. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. Parents may register their children for the 3-year-old class which meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings, or the 4-year-old classes, which meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings or afternoons. Celiac support group - More and more people are diagnosed with Celiac disease or wheat or gluten allergies. A new group has formed in the Southington area - the Central Connecticut Celiac Support Group. The group will meet on Sunday, Jan. 11, at 1:30 p.m. for a pot-luck dinner at Mulberry Gardens, 85 Mulberry St., Southington. McDonalds fundraiser - Monday, Jan. 12 from 5 to 8 p.m., Plantsville Elementary School is hosting "McTeacher's Night" at the Queen Street McDonalds. A make-your-own sundae bar will be available and there will be a chance to win door prizes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the school.

Get Organized program - The Southington Library, 255 Main St., has scheduled a Get Organized program on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. in the lower level program room. GO is a national program sponsored by the National Association of Professional Organizers that teaches techniques to simplify and reduce clutter in the home and office. Registration is required.

Legion meeting - The American Legion Kiltonic Post 72, 64 Main St., Southington, is scheduled to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the upper lounge of the Post Home just off the Town Green. Members and veterans who would like to be members are welcome to come to a meeting and become familiar with the good work the American Legion is doing for and in the community, for God and country, and for those who have served the country and are presently in need of help.

Newcomers and Neighbors Club - The Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Southington is a women's social club open to both new and lifelong residents of Southington. Monthly events include Ladies Night Out, Moms and Tots Playgroup, Couples Social, and Book Club. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the all-purpose room at the Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave., and will include a Zumba class. Medical facility open house - MidState Medical Center is hosting a "Business Advantage Night" in conjunction with the Southington Chamber of Commerce, Thursday, Jan. 15 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at 98 Main St., Southington. Parking is available in the rear of the building. Tour the new, modern facility and meet the staff in the medical offices: MidState Medical Group Primary Care Specialists of Southington, Clinical Laboratory Partners, Radiology Associates, L.L.C., and Comprehensive Orthopaedics.

Survivors of Homicide meeting - Survivors of Homicide, a support group for people who have had a loved one murdered, meet at Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave., Southington, on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Marie Pellegrini (860) 621-9939. Swing/ballroom dancing - A session of eight beginners and intermediate swing/ballroom dance classes are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26, Feb. 2, 9 and 23, March 2, 9, 16 and 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at North Center School, 240 N. Main St. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (860) 276-6219 to register. Pre-registration is required. Payment is due upon registration. Registration cannot be paid the night of class. Little League and Girl's Softball registration - A town-wide registration for all Southington Little Leagues and Girl's Softball will be held on two Saturdays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Derynoski Elementary School cafeteria, 240 Main St. This is for Southington residents only; the minimum age is 5 years old as of April 30, 2009. Parents should bring the child's birth certificate and the parent's driver's license for proof of residency. For more information, call the Parks and Recreation office at (860) 276-6219.

St. Albans Raid lecture - On Monday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m., the Southington Library will host a program presented by Ralph Lord Roy of Plantsville, who will speak on the "St. Albans Raid." Children's musical - The Southington Land Conservation Trust, Inc. will present the children's musical "Lemonade," Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St. The 45 minute show has 34 first- through fourth-graders performing. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased by calling Bonnie Sica at (860) 621-9553.

Pottery techniques demonstration - The Southington Arts and Crafts Association announces the first program of 2009, "Basic Pottery Throwing Techniques," Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Orchards at Southington, 34 Hobart St. This free demonstration will be presented by Richard Kupstis, a retired art and social studies teacher and past president of the Wesleyan Potters in Middletown. The demonstration follows a 6:30 p.m. members meeting.
