Daughters of the American Revolution meeting - The Hannah Woodruff Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Saturday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 581 Meriden Ave. Members should bring gifts for the residents of the Veterans' Home in Rocky Hill. Nursery school open house - Plantsville Nursery School, 109 Church St., has scheduled an open house for interested families or those already registered for the 2009-10 school year on Sunday, Jan. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. Parents may register their children for the 3-year-old class which meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings, or the 4-year-old classes, which meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings or afternoons. McDonald's fundraiser - Plantsville Elementary School has scheduled "McTeacher's Night" Monday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., at McDonald's 675 Queen St. A make-your-own sundae bar will be available and there will be a chance to win door prizes. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the school.

American Legion- The American Legion Kiltonic Post 72, 64 Main St., Southington, is scheduled to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the upper lounge of the Post Home just off the Town Green. Members and veterans who would like to be members are welcome to come to a meeting and become familiar with the good work the American Legion is doing for and in the community, for God and country, and for those who have served the country and are presently in need of help.
Get Organized - The Southington Library, 255 Main St., has scheduled a Get Organized program on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m., in the lower level program room. GO is a national program sponsored by the National Association of Professional Organizers that teaches techniques to simplify and reduce clutter in the home and office. Registration is required. Apple Valley Quilters meeting - The Apple Valley Quilters of Southington will meet Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hatton Elementary School, 50 Spring Lake Road. The program will feature guest lecturer Joanne Sullivan, who will present "Magnificent 7," demonstrating how to use shapes cut from 2-1/2 inch strips to make quilts. The public is welcome, but there is a $5 fee for non-members.
If school is canceled due to inclement weather, the meeting will also be canceled.

Newcomers and Neighbors Club - The Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Southington is a women's social club open to both new and lifelong residents of Southington. Monthly events include Ladies Night Out, Moms and Tots Playgroup, Couples Social, and Book Club. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the all-purpose room at the Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave., and will include a Zumba class. Parenting class - "Discipline and Your School-Aged Child" is the next topic in the Southington Youth Services Parent Information Series on Thursday, Jan. 15, 7 to 8:30 p.m., to be held at the youth services office, 93 Main St. Setting limits, disciplining children and teaching children responsibility and cooperation will be discussed. Southington Women's Club meeting - The Southington Women's Club is scheduled to meet Thursday, Jan. 15, 11:30 a.m., at The Orchards, 34 Hobart St., Southington. Lunch will be followed by a business meeting and a game of bingo. The club has scheduled its annual Military Whist, benefiting its scholarship program, for Tuesday, April 21 at the First Congregational Church Hall. Family Pizza Night - Family Pizza Night will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 5 to 8 p.m., at Southington Elks Lodge 1669, 114 Main St. A 16-inch pizza for four people with a choice of three toppings and also chips, salad and dessert can be purchased for $18. Additional pizzas are $10. Specialty pizzas such as Hawaiian, garlic chicken and broccoli, and buffalo chicken can also be ordered. Tickets must be purchased in advance in the tap room between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m.
Miss Southington pageant - The Miss Southington Scholarship Pageant 2009 will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 7 p.m., at Derynoski Elementary School, 240 Main St. Tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased at the door. Bus trip to Mohegan Sun - The Southington Grange 25 is hosting a bus trip to Mohegan Sun Casino Saturday, Jan. 17. The bus will depart at noon from the Riccio Lot in downtown Southington. The cost is $25 per person and includes a meal and gaming coupon.

Martin Luther King Jr. celebration - Truth and justice today is the theme for the 13th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration planned for Sunday, Jan. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. First Baptist Church of Southington began this event to celebrate and honor the civil rights leader, and to keep his vision alive. This year's guest speaker is the Rev. Dr. Peola Hicks, manager of the Guideposts OurPrayer outreach ministry and pastor of Christian Education and Discipleship at New Life Community Church United Methodist in New Fairfield. The event also includes a food stations luncheon, a discussion forum and music. Two middle school students, one from DePaolo and one from Kennedy, will receive recognition for best exemplifying the attributes of King and their commitment to the community. American Legion Auxiliary - The American Legion Auxiliary Kiltonic Unit 72, Southington, will resume monthly meetings Monday, Jan. 19, 7 p.m. in the Legion Post Hall, 66 Main St. After a short business meeting, the group will work on an Americanism Program, which consists of folding small pocket flags to give to departing troops and to troops currently deployed. Library craft program - Bring Your Own Crafts is a monthly drop-in program at the Southington Library for creative kids ages 7 and up with an adult. Children's musical - The Southington Land Conservation Trust has scheduled the children's musical "Lemonade," Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St. The 45-minute presentation includes 34 first- through fourth-graders. Valentine chocolate festival - For the sixth year in a row, the American Legion Auxiliary, Kiltonic Unit 72, in Southington will host the Valentine Chocolate Festival, Saturday, Feb. 7, (snow date Feb. 8), at the American Legion Post Home, 66 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a huge variety of all things chocolate, including candy, cakes, cookies, pies, and tortes, all handmade by members. In addition, there will be over 25 themed raffle baskets and a cafe to have lunch, consisting of stuffed baked potatoes, chowder, hot dogs, drinks and special desserts for a nominal price. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Breakfast Club - The Breakfast Club at the First Congregational Church of Southington, 37 Main St., across from the Town Green, meets on the second Thursday, September through June, from 8 to 9 a.m. in Memorial Hall. A complete breakfast is only $1, and the public is always welcome. Adequate parking is available in the municipal parking lot.

Valentine Dinner Dance - The Southington Elks Lodge, 114 Main St., is hosting a Valentine Dinner Dance, Saturday, Feb. 14. Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and the "Rockin Heartbeats" band will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight. The grand prize raffle is a Farmington Marriott overnight stay, including breakfast. Tickets are $25 per person and are available in the lodge's Tap Room.

Pottery techniques demonstration - The Southington Arts and Crafts Association has scheduled "Basic Pottery Throwing Techniques," for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m., at the Orchards at Southington, 34 Hobart St. This free demonstration is presented by Richard Kupstis, a retired art and social studies teacher and past president of the Wesleyan Potters in Middletown.
