Thanks to the generous underwriting support of Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, Foodshare has made a grant of $5,000 to the Salvation Army/Southington Community Services from its Partnership Fund. This grant will be used to pay for a temporary hire and materials to create a manual, welcome packet and welcome class for food pantry volunteers. It will also assist with networking and research efforts among local nonprofits relative to volunteering.

The Salvation Army/Southington Community Services has been a Foodshare partner agency since 2002. In addition to this recent cash grant, Foodshare provided 54,833 pounds of food in 2009 to help feed those families and individuals experiencing food insecurity in Southington. SCS served on average 580 unduplicated families each month.

Foodshare’s “Partnership Fund” was created by the organization’s Board of Directors to help local food pantries, community kitchens, and shelters meet their mission of assisting hungry people in the local communities that Foodshare serves. Funds distributed to agencies operating in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington come from the annual Walk Against Hunger, from which Foodshare sets aside 5 percent of all donations for this purpose, as well as The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain.
