Kristen's Kloset now provides prom clothing to area teens

There's a common expression, "share the wealth." In the case of Plainville and Southington, the adage could be "share the prom dresses."
Community services in both towns have collaborated on a project that enables teenagers in need to get prom dresses and accessories for free or reduced price. Kristen's Kloset, which formerly assisted only Southington students, is now inviting Plainville girls to come to the prom gown shop, located at 991 S. Main St., in Plantsville. The space was donated by Gary Saucier of Saucier Mechanical in Southington.
The partnership between the towns came about when 147 dresses were donated by Dianne Boney, a Plainville resident who is the owner of Stylish Impressions in Farmington. Susie Woerz, executive director of the Plainville Community Food Pantry, contacted Susan Saucier, director of Southington Youth Services, when it became evident that the local facility did not have adequate storage space. "I think it's a great program. We were thrilled to partner to give out these beautiful gowns. It's a great cause," Woerz said.
"Prom dresses are very expensive. This way girls can find something beautiful, up to date and cut down on expenses," Susan Saucier said. "These are new or gently used dresses; their gorgeous."
Other businesses stepped forward to make the collaboration possible. Dan Larson, owner of Sherwood Cleaners, 144 New Britain Avenue, Plainville, stored the 147 gowns and later transported them to the shop in Plantsville. His business likes to support good causes such as this, he said.
Battison's, 888 Queen St. in Southington, provided half-price coupons for dry cleaning and Modern Formals rental shop, at 474 N. Main St., is giving discounted rates on tuxedos. Price Chopper is helping with flowers as well, organizers said.
Kristen's Kloset was begun last year in memory of Kristen Warner, a Southington teenager who died in a car accident. The family was looking for a way to do something special in her honor and developed the idea with Youth Services, Saucier said.
Dresses can be obtained with a voucher from the two community service organizations or can be purchased for a contribution of $30. Accessories are an additional charge.
The grand opening of Kristen's Kloset is set for Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shop will continue to be open every Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., until May 17. Donations of costume jewelry, purses and dress shoes in good condition are still needed.
