Southington police arrested a former Southington resident in Michigan Wednesday on charges that he defrauded elderly residents of The Summit at Plantsville while working there last year.
Jamelle Byrd, 24, of 19080 Hilton Drive, Southfield, Mich., was charged with corrupt organizations and racketeering activity, third-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, second-degree forgery, third-degree larceny, fourth-degree larceny, credit card theft, conspiracy to traffic personal information and violation of probation.
According to police, Byrd worked as a certified nurse assistant at The Summit in early 2008. While working there, police said, he stole the personal property of several patients, including identifying information such as their date of birth and social security number.
“Byrd would then use the victim’s personal identifying information to steal their identities, obtain fraudulent credit cards, auto insurance policies, manufacture and cash counterfeit checks in their name, causing severe financial and credit problems for the victims,” police spokesman Sgt. Lowell DePalma said in a statement.
West Hartford police previously arrested Byrd on similar charges, according to police, leading to his imprisonment.
Shortly after his release on probation, he began committing crimes in Southington, police said.
In May 2008, Southington detectives served Byrd with a warrant, but he fled to Michigan, according to police.
In Michigan, Byrd used an alias to fraudulently obtain a license as a registered nurse and again began working with the elderly. Southfield police arrested Byrd for illegally working as an RN and stealing his patient’s credit cards.
Byrd was held on a total bond $880,000 and was presented in Bristol Superior Court Thursday.
