Softball wins, baseball and girls tennis seasons end

The five seeded Blue Knights softball team got another stellar performance from senior pitcher Brittany Volpe beating 28th seeded Greenwich, 5-1, and advancing to the second round of the Class LL state tournament. They face-off against 12 seed Staples at 4 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2. The winner of that game plays the winner of 4 Simsbury vs. 13 Stamford. If both Simsbury and Southington advance, it would be a CCC North rematch. The Lady Knights dropped two of their three losses to Simsbury. It would be their third match-up of the year.
The 29th seeded baseball team ended its roller coaster season, striking out 15 times against fourth seeded West Haven's ace, losing 4-2. Dylan Danko pitched a fantastic game, but Wast Haven scratched out some runs and was able to outlast Danko. The Blue Knights finished the regular season 10-10 on the diamond, with a share of the CCC North title. Coach Steve Matyczyk said they accomplished part of their goal by tying for the North, but would have liked to win some more games and go further in the state tournament. If the Knights had won, they would have faced 13 seed New Britain, a team they beat on the final day of the regular season.
The 13 seeded Lady Knights girls' tennis team took care of 20th seed Shelton 6-1 in the qualifying round before falling to four seed Staples, 7-love. The tennis program is slowly turning the corner and head coach Bob Garry, who is expected to retire from coaching, said he could not be more pleased with how the year went and how the team finished. "The girls were cheering on the bus like they had just won the championship, it was great," Garry said.
LACROSSE FINDS OUT FATE
The Blue Knights boys lacrosse team found out their fate Monday, as they drew the eight seed in the Division L tournament and will play at home against nine seed New Milford on Saturday, June 6, at 3 p.m. New Milford and Southington had identical records of 12-4 and New Milford is supposed to have one of the best midfielders in the state, according to head coach Ron Chase. If they win, they would play the winner of the top seeded Ridgefield vs. South Windsor/Trumbull game. South Windsor and Trumbull play a qualifying match Thursday to decide who gets Ridgefield.
